Ibn Jabal Institute’s new ‘Arabic for business’ course has been designed to cater for the needs of Arabic learners in the UAE. The course focuses on two objectives:
Level 1 | Course OutlineThe classes have been designed on a thematic basis. You will learn how to introduce yourself, answer and make phone calls, talk about your job and business, be able to talk about current events and navigate your way around an Arabic-speaking country. All of this will be achieved using vocabulary that will help you to also understand the Quran.By the end of the 10 lessons, you should: * be able to read and translate simple Arabic texts * have a vocabulary of approximately 250 words * be capable of simple conversation in a variety of subjects from business and current affairs to family and the weather Although this is a beginner's course, it does assume prior knowledge of the following: * Familiarity with the Arabic alphabet and the ability to read (without comprehension). * Basic ability to join the Arabic letters (without comprehension). We will provide guidance for those who need to consolidate these basics at the free compulsory induction class. Level 2 | Conversation Course Outline Level 2 offers those who have completed Level 1 or have reached an intermediate level in their Arabic an excellent opportunity to apply their knowledge of Arabic. You will negotiate challenging audio and written pieces from various genres of Arabic and hone your speech and comprehension skills. We see Level 2 as building on the foundation laid in Level 1. Level 1 is taught ‘prescriptively’: we state the rules and then illustrate them with examples so that you can learn a lot in a short space of time. Level 2 is taught ‘deductively’: we encounter bodies of language, whether spoken or written , and decipher them together. Then we incorporate them into our own repertoires so that we start speaking in the same Arabic idiom. You will be stimulated to interact with the language in all four key areas in this order of priority: 1. Speaking 2. Listening 3. Reading 4. Writing The overwhelming emphasis is on vocabulary building because words are the tools of an Arabic speaker's trade. This is achieved not only by straightforward vocabulary learning, but also by learning hikam (aphorisms), shi’r (poetry), Qur’an, Hadith and amthal (proverbs). Entry requirements You need to have completed Level 1 or equivalent. Please note that Level 1 does cover a significant amount of Arabic so please check with us if you wish to apply. Level 3 | Conversation Course Outline Level 3 focuses on advanced conversation for business environments and informal usage. You will be given outline materials, vocabulary and expressions and sentence connectors designed to stimulate conversation in a small group environment. The outline materials will be both interesting and stimulating and at the same time challenging and intensive. Although each lesson is almost a discrete entity, there is a trajectory of progress so that each lesson involves discussions that consolidate previous learning and introduces material for new conversational scenarios. The overwhelming emphasis is on appropriate use of words and expressions in order to turn ourselves into polished Arabic speakers. Entry requirements You need to have completed Level 2 or equivalent. Please note that Levels 1 and 2 cover a significant amount of Arabic so please check with us if you wish to apply. Teaching method The courses will be taught using Ibn Jabal Institute’s proven methods over the last 8 years. The approach combines traditional methods of teaching classical Arabic found in the India and the Arab world with modern techniques developed to teach Arabic to English speakers. As well as having to memorise various passages, students will be required to translate selected texts both from English to Arabic and from Arabic to English. In Level 1, objective 1 lessons will be taught in the English medium and objective 2 lessons will be taught in Arabic and supplemented by visual aids, focussing on interaction and encouraging discussion and conversation. In Level 2, we transition from English to Arabic medium teaching and Level 3 is taught entirely in Arabic medium. Course Texts All participants will be provided with the course material and are generally covered by the course fees. We may require students to purchase additional text books or dictionaries at their own cost. Level 1 Objective 1: The material has been specially designed to cover the core elements of the Ibn Jabal Institute Level 1 course book “Arabica” with a dual focus on Quranic and business Arabic. Objective 2: Materials will include comprehension exercises, conversation extracts and visual aids. Levels 2 and 3 Course materials will consist of selected pieces of text and language connectors which stimulate conversational scenarios. Homework With 3 hours of intensive tuition weekly you will be required to invest at least the same amount of time per week outside of class completing a demanding schedule of exercises and learning. In general, half an hour a day is better than a single block of three hours the night before class. Application Procedure Please download and fill in the Application Form here.
